"Capturing Reality - Digitalisierungstechniken in der Graphischen Datenverarbeitung"
Winter Semester 2007/2008
Course Description
Capturing reality – for example scanning objects to create 3D models or capturing their reflectance properties – plays an increasingly important role in many areas of computer graphics. Thanks to modern acquisition techniques and constant algorithmic and hardware improvements, the resulting models exhibit often unparalleled detail and realism. Captured models are quickly becoming popular in both digital film houses and industrial design studios, and the area is a hot research topic in computer vision, computer graphics, and robotics.
In this year's course GDV III, I will first introduce a set of basic tools and calibration techniques required in capturing applications. I will then describe a broad selection of state-of-the-art capturing techniques for various object properties (such as geometry and reflectance). The course will also discuss a basic set of relevant mathematical modeling and optimization techniques.
Exercises
The exercises will include both theoretical as well as practical tasks. The goal of the exercises is to provide hands-on experience on selected techniques presented in the lectures. The results of the exercises (bonus points awarded) are available via the wegreg system.
Final Exam
The final exam will be an oral exam. Oral exams will take place February 18 - 22, 2008. Successful completion of all exercises is required to participate in the final exam. Bonus points collected in the exercises will be applied to improve the final grade by up to one full grade. Students are however required to pass the oral exam (reach grade 4.0) without bonus points.
Time and Location
